Bring on 2016 and My New Year’s Theme

Can you believe the year is 2016? What happened to 2015? Didn’t I just post something about my focus for the year?

Apparently, it’s been twelve months or 365 days since that amazing post.

Remember how my focus for 2014 was “be the change you want to see”?

Then I decided to get an attitude adjustment in 2015 with a little “accentuate the positive” encouragement.

As the year sped toward completion, my creative brain began plotting how to make my campaign epic in the new year.

Enter Thirty Days of Thanksgiving.

You saw the posts on Facebook, right? What a great way to introduce the American holiday held the fourth Thursday of November.

You know, Thanksgiving Day. It’s my favorite of all the holidays (and it’s not because of the cornbread stuffing).

All this thankfulness got me thinking. Who can list all they are thankful for in a single month? It would take a year or more to even scratch the surface of how blessed we are.

A year of thanksgiving, then? My mind churned the title through its many layers of imagination and editing.

In the end, I settled on 365 Days of Gratitude.

Such a nice ring to that, don’t you think?

Which means, of course, that there are 366 days in 2016. You know because it’s a Leap Year.

Why can’t the Earth make it’s way around the sun in 365 days? Why does it have to take 365 days and six hours? That means we have to add an extra day every four years. It messes up the perfect synchronicity that is February and March.

Wait a minute!

I’m practicing the attitude of gratitude in 2016. Let’s try a new vein of thought here. I’m thankful for February 29.

However, I’m not changing my Twitter hashtag. I want my posts to reappear in years to come when anyone happens to search #365DaysofGratitude.

Maybe this thing will go viral. People everywhere will express their gratitude for the everyday things we take for granted. You know like waking up. Having air to breathe. Walking to the sink to turn on water for a refreshing drink (not everyone in the world can do this, you know).

What would the world be like if every single person
displayed an attitude of gratitude?

Another New Year – Another chance to NOT Break a Resolution

I’ve joined the multitudes that don’t actually make New Year’s Resolutions. Most of the time, I break them. Statistically, most resolutions are broken by February 1st.

In the past five years, I’ve set goals for myself in several broad areas: physical, spiritual, emotional and relational. I wish I could say I had met all my goals. Most years I meet as many as I don’t meet. Last year, I met all but one goal.

Since I’ve embarked on the journey toward fulfilling my life-long dream of becoming a published author, I’ve mixed up my categories for the coming year. My categories are: hobbies, physical, spiritual, writing and other.

I made a handy-dandy chart and have my goals for the first two months already filled in. Why didn’t I complete the whole year?

I want to be realistic. I’m not setting myself up for failure, but I might need to keep a goal for several months before actualizing the desired result.

For example, you’ll notice that my physical goal for January and February is to lose five pounds. I intend to lose five or more pounds each month. I didn’t fill in the goal for March because if I haven’t achieved my goal weight (or more specifically the correct fit of my clothes), I might repeat the weight loss goal for another month.

Since I already have stated word count goals for my writing, I wanted to use project goals in that category. The reason I didn’t put a goal for March is because I’m not sure if I will actually be finished revising the first book of my series in a month. Since this is my initial revision phase, I’m not certain how long the process will take.

Of course, it’s obvious I expect the book to be ready for other eyes by March. My goal in the “other” classification for that month is to get the first book in the trilogy out to beta readers.

Most of my publishing goals and deadlines have been entered in the “other” category. Writing and publishing are separate aspects of my new career. If I’m going to be a professional writer, I need to always write (or rewrite) and not sit on my hands once I begin the quest for an agent or publisher.

It’s another new year. I can hardly believe how quickly the calendar flipped in 2013.

Are you ready for another year? I love a new year because it promises a fresh start. Another opportunity to set and meet goals presents itself. The calendar is a clean slate – so why not my life?

What are your aspirations for 2014? Mine are simple: finish the novel and see it published. Simply stated, not so easily accomplished.

Writing Resolutions

I’m so far from perfect…but this is cute!

Isn’t it ironic that my first post of 2013 to deal with writing and resolving to write more regularly should be posted a day late?

Saturday’s chores fell upon me. I delved into the syllabi for my next term in college (come back on Wednesday for more on this). The Shakespearean textbook alone was enough to strangle the will of the strongest, most valiant soldier. My oldest son returned to college – so there were goodbyes to be said.

Now that I’ve attempted to justify myself, I will ask that you don’t forgive such obvious excuses for the remainder of this year. I have some resolutions for 2013 and I intend to keep them.

I resolve to:

  • Finish my English Language and Literature degree. I know this seems like a “gimme” since I’m slated to graduate at the end of June, providing I complete the final six classes. I’ve struggled with the desire to throw in the towel on this one over the past several months because of the added stress in my life.
  • Maintain this blog at the biweekly posting pace. I think I’m going to add some book reviews into the mix and perhaps sprinkle it with more of my off topic writing on occasion. I would love to hear what you’d like to read about.
  • Get my weight back to where I feel healthy and maintain that as a “ceiling” weight instead of a “floor.” Do you see any numbers here? No. (Read: And don’t ask!) They’re written down, I promise, but in my mind I’m a 119-pound 25-year-old, so leave me to my fantasy.
  • Post once each week on my church’s blog. I’ve already started on this one. Since I am a follower of that blog, you can click on the name in the side bar to see my posts. Also, if you get emails when I post on this blog, you will be notified about my guest posts elsewhere.
  • Maintain my prayer journal. Let’s face it, I’m going to need plenty of divine assistance if I’m going to complete all these goals.
  • Finish writing the YA novel. Yeah, I’d print the title here, but the working title isn’t all that inspiring and I don’t want to turn any future readers off.
  • Submit a story for publication. I’m not counting the submission to the SNHU literary journal. I have plenty of other stories that only need a little polish and some marketing legwork to enter the fray of the publishing world.
  • Continue writing four hours  or 4,000 words per week. I will probably try the ROW80 challenge again, as well.
